I am Ville Iho and my responsibility is Finnair production management. I write in my blog about all the processes which ensure, that flights operate and the network functions reliably in accordance with published timetables. Air transport logistics consists of airport operations, crew, aircraft use, technical maintenance and the operating environment. Air traffic control functions are official duties, but they, too, have a significant impact on us.

Every day Finnair has 300 flights, which take our passengers to more than 100 destinations worldwide on nearly 70 aircraft. My task is to know where each of our aircraft is at all times and to ensure that disruptions are kept to a minimum. Our most important goal is punctuality: late flights are irritating to customers, but they are even more unpalatable for the airline. We have calculated that every minute a flight is late costs the airline 200 euros in lost connections and baggage left behind.

My background is in Engineering and Management. I started in Finnair by working on my master’s thesis, which focused on the prerequisites for flight punctuality. I am still on that path today.

Flying is a captivating field, in which great discipline and painstakingly controlled processes are combined with customer-oriented work with people. An airline is at the same time a complex machine and a dynamic network consisting of thousands of people.

This work is extraordinarily rewarding from one day to the next. In addition to its challenging and diverse nature, the concrete aspects of the business are also attractive. The results of my work are evident every day. On an annual level, it affects the flight experience of a total of nine million Finnair passengers.
